In this special issue of CriSTaL, we bring you eleven papers that were presented at the 10th Annual New Materialisms Conference, hosted by the University of the Western Cape in December 2019. The intention of the conference was to provide an opportunity to raise important questions regarding issues in higher education affecting both the South African and the global context, particularly in relation to the use and value of western theorists in local research and curricula, as well as who gains epistemological and physical access to higher education. Of the eleven papers published here, three are from keynote speakers, three are from their respondents and the remaining five are from presenters at the conference.
