Just as colonialism and apartheid sought to disrupt the culture and silence the voices of the oppressed, so too did the struggle against such repression generate resistance in the form of cultural expression. JUDY SEIDMAN traces the poetry, music, writing and other art forms that emerged in the underground and exiled liberation movements following the clampdown and bannings of the early 1960s, focusing on the momentum generated in the cultural sector in the wake of the 1976 uprising.
